CBT FOR ANXIETY
AT THE FITZROVIA PSYCHOLOGY CLINIC

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

  • Initial Consultation: Your first appointment provides an opportunity to discuss your concerns and how anxiety is affecting your everyday life. Your clinician will take time to understand the situations that trigger anxiety, how you respond to them and the thoughts, feelings and behaviours associated with your experiences.
  • Comprehensive Assessment: We carry out a thorough psychological assessment to understand your anxiety and the factors that may be contributing to or maintaining it. This may include exploring your symptoms, patterns of thinking, behaviours, avoidance, physical sensations and the impact anxiety has on your day-to-day life.
  • Personalised Treatment Plan: Following your assessment, your clinician will develop an individualised treatment plan based on your needs and treatment goals. CBT is not a one-size-fits-all approach, so treatment is tailored to the particular difficulties you are experiencing and the areas of life you would like to change.
  • Evidence-Based CBT: CBT focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours. Your clinician will help you identify patterns that may be contributing to anxiety and develop practical strategies for responding differently. Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include behavioural techniques, cognitive strategies and gradual work towards situations that have become difficult or are being avoided.
  • Ongoing Support: We provide therapy in a supportive and confidential environment, with your progress reviewed throughout treatment. Your clinician will work collaboratively with you to ensure that therapy remains focused on your individual needs and goals.

Kate is an experienced adult psychologist who provides therapy for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties, low self esteem, and significant life transitions.

Kate’s approach is relational and reflective, helping clients explore the roots of their difficulties and understand how past experiences shape current patterns. Therapy often involves gently exploring the safety strategies that may have helped in the past but may now be keeping things stuck. Alongside this depth focused work, Kate also offers skills based interventions with a focus on developing practical coping strategies in the here-and-now to manage symptoms and move towards meaningful change.

She has a particular interest and expertise in working with the impacts of unresolved childhood trauma, relational difficulties, self criticism, and low self esteem. Her style is warm, collaborative, and grounded in a deep understanding of how early experiences shape adult wellbeing.

“I really valued and appreciated the structure that Kate gave this work – it helped me see that the issues that felt overwhelming could be broken down into more manageable pieces and that by chipping away at each of these I could get results. Kate was always clear at the start and end of sessions about what we were working on, what the work between sessions should be and how we were progressing. This was hugely helpful. I wanted to thank Kate from the bottom of my heart for her empathy, kindness, astute insight and expert. She is brilliant!”

He used a combination of EMDR, CBT and talking therapy, always tailoring sessions to what I needed at the time. What stood out most was his adaptability and care. Some weeks EMDR was the right approach, while at other times we needed space for talking therapy instead, and he always responded with sensitivity and professionalism.

Throughout the process he was patient, kind, thoughtful and incredibly supportive. He created a safe and trusting environment where I felt listened to and understood, never rushed or judged. His approach was compassionate, flexible and highly skilled, and I always felt he genuinely cared about helping me make progress.

I am so grateful for the support he gave me and the positive impact it has had on my confidence and wellbeing. Dr Bonner is an exceptional therapist and I would wholeheartedly recommend him”. Former Client

Psychotherapist

Mr Jan Sheppard

Psychotherapist

I am an existential-phenomenological individual, couple and family psychotherapist with 25 years of experience in the public and private sector. This has included working in four NHS departments as well as teaching and supervising within many of the country’s most reputable training organisations. I have published papers in the field of existential analysis and psychiatry and now work full time in private practice.

The heart of my practice is careful and attentive listening. I speak in ordinary non-technical language and ask many simple questions. The setting is intimate and cooperative and conversations are confidential.

The primary aim of my work is to increase understanding and deepen insight into patterns of behaviour and experience which people identify as problematic and wish to clarify and resolve, whether you attend as an individual, couple or family. This includes a wide range of interpersonal and emotional difficulties (e.g problems related to communication, sex, intimacy, sleep, food etc) as well as the full range of problems psychiatrists claim to deal with (e.g diagnoses of schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, OCD, ADHD, PTSD etc). My main professional interest is in helping small groups whether couples or families in various configurations disentangle and demystify their relationships with one another.
Some people attend with a specific problem, (eg addiction, anxiety, depression etc.) whereas other people attend for a deeper analysis which isn’t focussed on eliminating a specific symptom, although the symptom will often disappear as a consequence of this exploration.
I also see many people referred from medical settings wishing to investigate the possibility of a psychosomatic component to either the onset or cure of genuine disease.

“Jan has been by far the best professional in the field of psychotherapy/ therapy/ counselling that I’ve seen. I’ve tried a range of professionals but found Jan’s existentialist approach to therapy the most useful. He has taken me from feeling out of touch with my life and emotions to being able to recognise when things are in my control and how I can get a hold of them easily with communication and responsibility.” Former Client

My two latest publications are:

De-Meaning Psychotherapy: The New Psychiatric Critic. Published in Mad in the USA in March this year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CBT for anxiety?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a psychological therapy that explores the relationship between thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours. CBT for anxiety can help you understand patterns that may be maintaining anxiety and develop more helpful ways of responding to anxious thoughts and situations.

How can CBT help with anxiety?

CBT can help you identify patterns of thinking and behaviour that contribute to anxiety. Therapy can then focus on developing practical strategies to manage anxious thoughts and feelings, reduce avoidance and build confidence in situations that have become difficult.

What happens during CBT for anxiety?

CBT sessions provide an opportunity to explore your experiences of anxiety and understand the patterns associated with it. Your clinician may introduce practical strategies and exercises to help you work with anxious thoughts, behaviours and situations. The exact approach will depend on your individual needs and treatment goals.

How long does CBT for anxiety take?

The length of CBT varies depending on the nature and severity of your difficulties, your treatment goals and how you respond to therapy. Your clinician will discuss the recommended approach and expected length of treatment with you following your assessment.

Can CBT help with different types of anxiety?

Yes. CBT can be used to treat a range of anxiety difficulties, including generalised anxiety, panic, specific phobias and anxiety associated with particular situations. Your clinician will assess your individual experiences and discuss whether CBT is an appropriate treatment option for you.

Will I have to talk about difficult experiences?

CBT involves discussing the thoughts, feelings and situations associated with anxiety, but your clinician will work at a pace that is appropriate for you. Treatment is collaborative, and you will have the opportunity to discuss what feels manageable and relevant to your goals.

Is CBT available online?

The Fitzrovia Psychology Clinic offers psychological therapy remotely as well as in person. Your clinician can discuss the most appropriate format for your individual needs.

How do I arrange for an assessment?

If you would like to find out more about CBT for anxiety at The Fitzrovia Psychology Clinic, please contact us to arrange an assessment with one of our experienced clinicians.

When should I consider CBT for anxiety?

CBT for anxiety may be appropriate when persistent worry, fear or avoidance is having an impact on your day-to-day life. It can be particularly helpful when anxious thoughts or behaviours are difficult to manage independently or are preventing you from doing things you would otherwise like to do. An assessment can help determine whether CBT is an appropriate treatment option for your individual needs.
