WHAT WE TREAT

Children and young people can experience a wide range of emotional, psychological and behavioural difficulties. Our child psychologists support concerns including: anxiety, depression and low mood, OCD, panic disorder, phobias, trauma and PTSD, eating disorders, low self-esteem, sleep difficulties, behavioural difficulties and difficulties at home or school.

CHILDHOOD ABUSE AND TRAUMA

Childhood abuse and trauma can affect how a young person feels, behaves and relates to others. The impact is not always immediately apparent, and some children may find it difficult to understand or talk about what they have experienced.

Our clinicians have specialist experience supporting children, adolescents and adults affected by childhood abuse and trauma. We provide a safe, compassionate space to explore their experiences and understand how these may be affecting their wellbeing.

Where trauma is a concern, we begin with a thorough assessment before developing a personalised treatment plan based on the individual’s needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a child psychologist do?

A child psychologist helps children and adolescents understand and manage emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties. They use evidence-based psychological therapies that are adapted to the child’s age, development and individual needs.

At The Fitzrovia Psychology Clinic, our psychologists provide a safe and supportive environment where children and families can explore concerns and work towards meaningful change.

When should I consider seeing a child psychologist?

There is no single point at which a child should see a psychologist. You may want to consider seeking support if your child is experiencing ongoing anxiety, low mood, changes in behaviour, sleep difficulties, trauma-related symptoms or difficulties at home or school.

It can also be helpful to seek specialist support if you are concerned about the impact of childhood abuse or trauma.

Will parents be involved in my child's therapy?

This depends on the child’s age, needs and the type of support they are receiving. Parents and family members may be involved where this would be helpful, particularly when changes at home can support progress in therapy.

We will discuss the role of parents and carers as part of the assessment and agree an approach that feels appropriate.

What types of therapy are available for children and young people?

Our clinicians use a range of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), EMDR and Schema Therapy.

The right approach will depend on the child’s individual needs. Treatment begins with an assessment so that we can understand what they are experiencing and develop a personalised treatment plan.

Can you help children who have experienced trauma or abuse?

Yes. Our clinicians have specialist experience supporting children and young people who have experienced childhood abuse and trauma.

We understand that talking about difficult experiences can be incredibly hard. Our approach is compassionate and carefully paced, with treatment tailored to the individual and their circumstances.

Do you offer online appointments with a child psychologist?

Yes. Online child psychology sessions are available for children and young people who are unable to attend our London clinics, where online therapy is clinically appropriate. Sessions take place via secure video platforms and are delivered by experienced clinicians.

  • I am extremely grateful for the care Allison showed me during our sessions. She always adapted sessions to match my needs and demonstrated a real understanding of the difficulties I was facing. Her openness and kindness meant that trust was developed very quickly, and I would have no hesitation in seeing her again should I ever need to.

  • The early stages showed me that Emily truly cares about helping other people. I was hesitant to start sessions, but Emily remained consistent with reaching out and always remained patient and understanding. The depth and structure of the sessions was incredible, I’ve never worked with a therapist who has left me feeling like I understand and appreciate to I am to such a level.
