1 in 10 children experience mental health problems and even very young children may show early warning signs of mental health difficulties. These mental health problems are usually clinically diagnosable, and include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder.

Half of all mental health disorders show their first signs before a person turns 14 years old, and three quarters of mental health disorders begin before the age of 24.

Alarmingly, however, 70% of children and young people who experience a mental health problem have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age. Early mental health support can help a child before problems interfere with other developmental areas.

The emotional wellbeing of children is just as important as their physical health. Good mental health allows children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded, healthy individuals.
