PSYCHOSIS TREATMENT
AT THE FITZROVIA PSYCHOLOGY CLINIC

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

  • Initial Consultation: You will meet with an experienced clinician to discuss your experiences, concerns, and goals for treatment. We take time to understand what you have been experiencing and how this may be affecting different areas of your life.
  • Comprehensive Assessment: We explore your experiences, thoughts, emotions, behaviours, relationships, and circumstances to develop a clearer understanding of your individual needs. This helps us identify appropriate treatment options and any additional support that may be beneficial.
  • Understanding Your Experiences: Psychosis can affect people in different ways. Together, we explore experiences such as unusual beliefs, hearing voices, visual experiences, anxiety, paranoia, or difficulties with thinking and concentration in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
  • Personalised Treatment Plan: Treatment is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals. Depending on your needs, psychological therapy may be provided alongside other forms of treatment, including medication, with the aim of reducing distress and supporting recovery.
  • Ongoing Support: We provide ongoing psychological support throughout treatment, helping you develop strategies for managing distressing experiences and improving your confidence and everyday wellbeing. We offer both in-person appointments in London and online therapy where appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Psychosis?

Psychosis is a term used to describe a range of experiences that can affect the way a person perceives or interprets the world around them. These may include hearing voices, seeing things others do not, or experiencing unusual beliefs.

What are the symptoms of Psychosis?

Symptoms can include paranoia, suspiciousness, hearing voices, visual hallucinations, unusual beliefs, disorganised thoughts or behaviour, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, fear, and sleep difficulties. Experiences vary from person to person.

What causes Psychosis?

Psychosis can occur in association with different mental health conditions, including Schizophrenia. A range of psychological, biological, and environmental factors may contribute to someone’s experiences. An assessment can help establish what support may be appropriate.

Can Psychosis be treated?

Yes. Psychosis is treatable, and many people can make a significant or complete recovery with appropriate support. Treatment may involve medication, psychological therapy, or a combination of approaches depending on the individual’s circumstances.

What psychological therapies are available for Psychosis?

At The Fitzrovia Psychology Clinic, psychological treatments for Psychosis may include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp), Family Therapy, and Narrative Therapy.

What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp)?

CBTp is a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy adapted for people experiencing Psychosis. It can help individuals explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and experiences and develop strategies for managing distress.

Can Family Therapy help with Psychosis?

Family Therapy can help families understand Psychosis and its impact. It can support communication, reduce difficulties within relationships, and help family members develop effective ways of supporting one another.

Can Narrative Therapy help with Psychosis?

Narrative Therapy can help individuals explore the meaning and influence of their experiences while recognising their strengths, values, and identity beyond their difficulties. It may be used alongside other evidence-based treatments.

Why is early treatment important for Psychosis?

Seeking support early can be important because early intervention may improve the effectiveness of treatment and support greater recovery. If you are experiencing symptoms of Psychosis, it is important to seek appropriate professional support.

Do you offer online therapy for Psychosis?

We offer both in-person appointments in London and online therapy where clinically appropriate. The most suitable format will depend on your individual circumstances and treatment needs.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your experiences, circumstances, and treatment goals. This will be discussed during the initial assessment and reviewed regularly throughout treatment.

  • I am extremely grateful for the care Allison showed me during our sessions. She always adapted sessions to match my needs and demonstrated a real understanding of the difficulties I was facing. Her openness and kindness meant that trust was developed very quickly, and I would have no hesitation in seeing her again should I ever need to.

    Former Client

  • The early stages showed me that Emily truly cares about helping other people. I was hesitant to start sessions, but Emily remained consistent with reaching out and always remained patient and understanding. The depth and structure of the sessions was incredible, I’ve never worked with a therapist who has left me feeling like I understand and appreciate to I am to such a level.
