Mai Shiers

Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Registered Mental Health Nurse

Mai Shiers is a highly skilled Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Registered Mental Health Nurse who has spent the past 17 years working in specialist eating disorder services in both NHS and private settings.

Mai completed her first undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Sussex before going on to study for a further undergraduate Degree in Mental Health Nursing, where she gained a Starred First Class Degree with Hons. Following a number of years working as a Senior Mental Health Nurse in an all- ages NHS Community Eating Disorders Service, Mai then undertook a Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at the University of Hertfordshire, for which she gained a Distinction. In 2022, Mai completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders at University College London (UCL). Most recently, Mai completed training with the Maudsley to become an Accredited MANTRA practitioner.

Mai specialises in the treatment of older adolescents and adults with eating disorders, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, OSFED, and other Atypical presentations. Alongside her work with The Fitzrovia Psychology Clinic, Mai holds a senior leadership position in an adult eating disorder service within the NHS and is also employed by the University of Hertfordshire as a visiting lecturer and group supervisor on their Postgraduate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Programmes.

Mai is passionate about drawing upon evidence-based approaches within her practice and has undertaken extensive training in psychological therapies for eating disorders including CBT for Eating Disorders (CBT-E, CBT-T, CBT-AN-20), Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA), Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM), Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa (FT-AN), Compassion Focused Therapy for Eating Disorders (CFT-E), and SPEAKS Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa (rooted in Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) and Schema Therapy).

Mai has an interest in ‘third-wave’ CBT approaches including Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and is able to draw upon these approaches within her therapeutic work.

At the heart of Mai’s work is the belief that change is possible. Mai seeks to create a safe and non-judgemental space where clients can explore their difficulties, and develop a shared understanding of some of the factors that might be maintaining these difficulties.

Eating disorder therapy with Mai is tailored to the individual’s needs and preferences. Therapy focuses on understanding the role that food, eating, and related behaviours have in helping a person to manage aspects of their life, their emotional experiences, and relationship with their body. Mai works collaboratively with clients to help them understand and relate to themselves, their experiences and their body, in more helpful ways long term, and with kindness and compassion.
Outside of her clinical work, Mai is a BABCP Accredited CBT Supervisor and provides CBT supervision to qualified clinicians and trainee CBT Therapists.
