DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Grief itself is not a mental health disorder and does not require a diagnosis. However, some people may experience prolonged or complicated grief, where feelings of loss continue to dominate daily life and significantly affect functioning over time.

A thorough assessment helps us understand the nature of your grief, the impact it is having on your life and whether additional factors such as anxiety, depression or trauma may also be contributing to your difficulties.

Treatment focuses on helping individuals process their loss, understand their emotional responses and develop healthy ways of adapting to life following bereavement.

Evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can help individuals make sense of their experience while building resilience and coping strategies for the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between grief and bereavement?

Bereavement refers specifically to the loss of a loved one through death, while grief describes the emotional, psychological and physical responses that follow a significant loss.

Is there a normal way to grieve?

No. Grief affects everyone differently. Emotions, coping styles and the length of the grieving process can vary considerably from person to person.

What emotions are common during grief?

People may experience sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, loneliness, numbness, relief or a combination of many different emotions throughout the grieving process.

What is complicated grief?

Complicated grief refers to a persistent and intense form of grief that continues to significantly interfere with daily functioning and wellbeing over an extended period of time.

How can therapy help with grief?

Therapy provides a supportive space to process loss, understand emotions, develop coping strategies and adjust to life after bereavement.

Which therapies are effective for grief and bereavement?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Narrative Therapy are commonly used to support people through grief and bereavement.

Can therapy help years after a bereavement?

Yes. Some individuals seek support months or even years after a loss, particularly if grief continues to affect their wellbeing, relationships or daily life.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. We offer both in-person appointments in London and online therapy sessions where clinically appropriate.

  • Jonathan is fantastic. I found our sessions to be a very calm environment that really helped me to reset each week. Jonathan really builds a great rapport, and is very practical and realistic during the process. I could not recommend him more!

    Former Client

  • I am extremely grateful for the care Allison showed me during our sessions. She always adapted sessions to match my needs and demonstrated a real understanding of the difficulties I was facing. Her openness and kindness meant that trust was developed very quickly, and I would have no hesitation in seeing her again should I ever need to.

    Former Client

  • The early stages showed me that Emily truly cares about helping other people. I was hesitant to start sessions, but Emily remained consistent with reaching out and always remained patient and understanding. The depth and structure of the sessions was incredible, I’ve never worked with a therapist who has left me feeling like I understand and appreciate to I am to such a level.
