PICA TREATMENT
AT THE FITZROVIA PSYCHOLOGY CLINIC

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

  • Initial Consultation: You will meet with a clinician experienced in eating and feeding disorders. We explore the behaviour in detail, including what items are consumed, when it occurs, and how it affects health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Comprehensive Assessment: A detailed assessment examines patterns of behaviour, possible triggers, and contributing factors such as sensory needs, developmental profile, anxiety, or nutritional deficiencies.
  • Clear Feedback: You will receive a clear clinical understanding of the behaviour, including whether it meets the criteria for Pica and what factors may be maintaining it.
  • Personalised Treatment Plan: We develop a tailored plan collaboratively. This may include behavioural strategies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and practical support to reduce risk and replace the behaviour with safer alternatives.
  • Personalised Treatment Plan: We offer private appointments in London and online therapy where appropriate, ensuring accessible and consistent support throughout treatment.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Pica is diagnosed when an individual persistently consumes non-food substances for at least one month in a way that is not developmentally appropriate and may pose a risk to health.

A full diagnosis involves understanding not only the behaviour itself, but also the context in which it occurs. This includes exploring emotional wellbeing, sensory preferences, developmental factors, and any co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or autism.

Treatment at The Fitzrovia Psychology Clinic is always tailored to the individual. Where appropriate, we may work alongside GPs or other healthcare professionals to assess nutritional deficiencies such as iron or zinc, which are sometimes linked to Pica.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Pica?

Pica is an eating and feeding disorder involving the repeated consumption of non-food items such as soil, chalk, paper, or soap.

Is Pica common?

Pica can occur across all ages and backgrounds, but it is more commonly seen in children and individuals with developmental conditions. Research suggests it may affect up to 9–25% of children with developmental difficulties.

What causes Pica?

There is no single cause. Contributing factors may include nutritional deficiencies (such as iron or zinc), sensory needs, developmental differences, stress, boredom, or underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or OCD.

Is Pica linked to autism?

Yes, Pica is more commonly observed in individuals with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). This may be related to sensory preferences, difficulty distinguishing between objects, or using the behaviour to manage anxiety.

What are the risks of Pica?

Pica can lead to health risks including digestive issues, infections, choking, or exposure to harmful substances. It may also impact social development and confidence.

How is Pica treated?

Treatment typically involves understanding the cause of the behaviour and using behavioural strategies to reduce risk. This may include creating safer environments, teaching the difference between edible and non-edible items, and introducing appropriate alternatives.

Will Pica improve over time?

In some cases, particularly in young children, the behaviour may reduce with age. When Pica is linked to developmental conditions, it may persist for longer, but meaningful progress can be made with the right support.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. We offer both in-person sessions in London and online therapy where clinically appropriate.

  • The early stages showed me that Emily truly cares about helping other people. I was hesitant to start sessions, but Emily remained consistent with reaching out and always remained patient and understanding. The depth and structure of the sessions was incredible, I’ve never worked with a therapist who has left me feeling like I understand and appreciate to I am to such a level.
