EMDR THERAPY
AT THE FITZROVIA PSYCHOLOGY CLINIC

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

  • Initial Consultation: Meet with a clinician experienced in trauma-focused therapies and EMDR. We will explore your experiences, current symptoms, emotional wellbeing, and how past events may be affecting your daily life, relationships, and sense of safety.
  • Comprehensive Assessment: A detailed psychological assessment helps us understand the nature of your trauma, emotional responses, coping strategies, and any related conditions such as anxiety, depression, dissociation, or PTSD.
  • Understanding Trauma Responses: Your clinician will help you understand how distressing memories and traumatic experiences can affect the brain and body, including symptoms such as hypervigilance, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, nightmares, and emotional overwhelm.
  • Clear Clinical Feedback: You will receive a clear clinical understanding of your symptoms, including whether EMDR may be an appropriate treatment approach for your needs and recovery goals.
  • Personalised Treatment Plan: Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual. Private EMDR therapy may involve preparation work, grounding and stabilisation techniques, trauma processing sessions, and ongoing therapeutic support at a pace that feels manageable and safe.
  • EMDR Processing Sessions: During EMDR sessions, you will be guided to briefly focus on distressing memories, thoughts, or beliefs while engaging in bilateral stimulation techniques such as guided eye movements. Over time, this process aims to reduce the emotional intensity connected to traumatic experiences.
  • Supportive and Flexible Care: We offer flexible appointments at our London clinic alongside online therapy where clinically appropriate, ensuring accessible and consistent support throughout your treatment journey.
  • Collaborative Care: Where appropriate, our clinicians work alongside GPs, psychiatrists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure joined-up care and ongoing support throughout treatment.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy used to help individuals process traumatic memories and distressing life experiences that may lead to symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or emotional overwhelm. A comprehensive psychological assessment helps us understand how trauma is affecting your wellbeing and whether EMDR may be the right approach for you. EMDR is recommended by NICE as a first-line treatment for PTSD, and at The Fitzrovia Psychology Clinic we offer private EMDR therapy in London, tailored to the individual, alongside emotional stabilisation work and support for related difficulties such as anxiety or low mood.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR is a psychological therapy that helps people process traumatic memories and distressing life experiences so they feel less overwhelming and emotionally disruptive.

What can EMDR help with?

EMDR is commonly used to treat PTSD and trauma-related symptoms, and can also help with anxiety, panic, low self-esteem, emotional distress, and the lasting impact of difficult life events.

What happens during EMDR sessions?

During sessions, you will be guided to briefly focus on a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements. This helps the brain reprocess the memory in a more adaptive way over time.

Is EMDR effective for PTSD?

Yes. EMDR is recommended by NICE as a first-line treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and is widely recognised as an effective trauma-focused therapy.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your experiences and goals. Your therapist will discuss this with you during assessment and review progress regularly throughout treatment.

Do you offer private EMDR therapy in London?

Yes. We offer private EMDR therapy in London with experienced clinicians specialising in trauma and PTSD treatment.

Do you offer online EMDR therapy?

Yes. Alongside in-person appointments, EMDR can also be offered online where clinically appropriate.

  • I am extremely grateful for the care Allison showed me during our sessions. She always adapted sessions to match my needs and demonstrated a real understanding of the difficulties I was facing. Her openness and kindness meant that trust was developed very quickly, and I would have no hesitation in seeing her again should I ever need to.

    Former Client

  • The early stages showed me that Emily truly cares about helping other people. I was hesitant to start sessions, but Emily remained consistent with reaching out and always remained patient and understanding. The depth and structure of the sessions was incredible, I’ve never worked with a therapist who has left me feeling like I understand and appreciate to I am to such a level.
